Gingerbread on a Pink Plate


While we were away last weekend, we indulged a bit. Jack and I rarely have a dessert but this was just too good to turn down. This recipe is from my friend's mother. They are both wonderful bakers who excel in traditional New England favorites. The recipe was originally from a Rebekah cookbook.

These community cookbooks are full of wonderful recipes. The directions are not always precise but a little experimenting can soon figure the recipe out!

Mother's Gingerbread

2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon each of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger
1/2 cup oil
1 cup molasses
1 cup very hot water
Beat all together with mixer. Spray 9 x13 pan with baking spray.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until done.



 The lace doily which looks like an heirloom was made on an embroidery machine. Just amazing what these machines can do.



This little plate was made by Carr China from Grafton, W. Virginia. The pattern is Dayton with a Greek Key border. Carr China made restaurant and diner china for years and it is now very collectible. You can read about the company here.

  3. Nothing looks more vintage good than gingerbread on Carr China or any transferware style plate. Very pretty. Whenever I use one of the older cookbooks, I always feel as if I am revisiting foods from long ago, especially if they say "Mother's Whatever" or "Grandmother's Whatever." Enjoy this overcast/rainy day. It's a good one for gingerbread and tea.

    Such a treat is allowed every now and again, especially as we head into Autumn.

  27. Carol, You are a lifesaver. Bobby G. loves gingerbread. I have never made it before and just last week looked for a box mix and didn't find one. Your recipe is PERFECT! I bought some jarred lemon sauce at a cute little shop this past summer. Now I can make the gingerbread and use the lemon sauce. HPS P.S. although I don't have a pretty pink plate like yours to serve it on.

  34. It is amazing how much work those lace pieces used to take that now are done by machine. Something is lost I think --- I have a tatting piece framed that my great aunt made, and I love that is not precisely perfect! Hope you get some good weather soon!
