Relish the relish......

We did it. We have talked about it for a couple of years. We found green tomatoes and we made green tomato relish. Above is my Gram Potter's meat grinder - a Russwin made around 1901. I have found that grinding the ingredients for the relish gives a texture that I prefer. However, the relish has also been made in a food processor.

I chopped and Jack used the grinder.

One of the first posts I wrote is about this relish and you can find the recipe here. The spacing was a real issue for me back then!

We added some hot peppers for a little zing!

We salted the mixture to draw out the excess liquid and then rinsed and drained the mixture. The rest of the ingredients were added and then cooked on top of the stove until dark and thicker. The cabin smelled wonderful!

Until next year!

Green tomato chutney is one of my favourites to make, but this year they all ripened!
So I made spicy tomato chutney instead, yours looks delish and the old grinder is wonderful.

Carol, my mother gave me her meat grinder and told me that it was an extraordinary kitchen tool and that I was never ever to get rid of it. I still have it and recently used it to grind chicken into chicken salad sandwiches. The texture was perfect and not all mushed to bits the way the food processor would do. That must be what you are saying about the pickle relish ingredients, too. Are you leaving your relishes behind or packing them in the suitcase? ☺

Oh, Carol! That meat grinder reminds me so much of my grandmother. I don't know where hers is. I guess some of the step grandchildren have it because we don't. But that's okay. As long as it is used and enjoyed, I'm happy.

But look at what you've done! I'm so impressed as I'm sure your grandmother would be, too. Good going!

XO,

Sheila

I am now on a mission with leaving you a comment. This is my third try, the others went out there somewhere in bloggerland. Excuse me please if all 3 show up here. Anyway, your relish is great, Carol. I want to try it after I get some green tomatoes. I sometimes use an old grinder like yours also. It gives perfect texture to about anything.

I loved this post! We make a similar relish recipe with green tomatoes every other year, it makes so much it lasts that long! Grandma's grinder is in a handy spot in my kitchen for making ham salad! Beautiful pictures and thanks for the memories!!

Carol, your post really brought back memories for me tonight of helping my mother make relish. I can remember wanting to use the grinder because back then we thought it was fun. Little did we know being a kid. I can remember crying when we made home made horseradish. I still have my grinder that my mother gave me when we got married which will be 48 years the 19th of this month. We didn't add the hot peppers to our green tomato relish back then. Have a great weekend. Your Missouri Friend.

Memories here too -- of my mother's meat grinder. She would get it out for grinding ham for special sandwiches. I can see it all now ... !! and almost taste it!
