While we were away last weekend, we indulged a bit. Jack and I rarely have a dessert but this was just too good to turn down. This recipe is from my friend's mother. They are both wonderful bakers who excel in traditional New England favorites. The recipe was originally from a Rebekah cookbook.
These community cookbooks are full of wonderful recipes. The directions are not always precise but a little experimenting can soon figure the recipe out!
Mother's Gingerbread
2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon each of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger
1/2 cup oil
1 cup molasses
1 cup very hot water
Beat all together with mixer. Spray 9 x13 pan with baking spray.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until done.
The lace doily which looks like an heirloom was made on an embroidery machine. Just amazing what these machines can do.
This little plate was made by Carr China from Grafton, W. Virginia. The pattern is Dayton with a Greek Key border. Carr China made restaurant and diner china for years and it is now very collectible. You can read about the company here.
I am joining Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for another Pink Saturday. I hope you will stop by and say hi!
Happy Pink Saturday!

Yum!! and I love the pretty plate too..
Never baked a gingerbread, now I copy-paste your mom's recipe... thanks..and that plate is gorgeous, hugs, Flavia
Nothing looks more vintage good than gingerbread on Carr China or any transferware style plate. Very pretty. Whenever I use one of the older cookbooks, I always feel as if I am revisiting foods from long ago, especially if they say "Mother's Whatever" or "Grandmother's Whatever." Enjoy this overcast/rainy day. It's a good one for gingerbread and tea.
Oh this looks divine. I want some right now with my coffee.
I love that pretty plate and I thank you for the gingerbread recipe. I looks delicious! Pamela
Yummy, it all looks delicious and would go down a treat with a lovely cup of Yorkshire tea!! Happy Pink Saturday to you, cannot believe it will be October 1st!! Have a great weekend, Jackie in Surrey, UK.x

Did you make it?????
Can you really do that on an embroidery machine.
Holy smokes.
Do you embroider on wash-away stuff or what? Amazing!

Mmmm....gingerbread, how scrumptious it looks topped with cream.
Such a treat is allowed every now and again, especially as we head into Autumn.
Pretty plate too and the doily does look handmade, did you make it?
Hope your weekend is grand!
That was such a wonderfully homey image - of plate and doily and gingerbread - I believe I could almost smell it!
I adore gingerbread...my mother used to make it all the time! Thanks for sharing that vintage recipe. (I think Mom used a Jiffy mix. LOL)
Did YOU make the lovely lace doily on your machine???? Its GORGEOUS!
Carol, this cake looks and sounds delicious and I love baking so will have to try this. Love the 'antique' looking lace,a touch of romanticism! Happy PS #76

My Pink is here, hope you can come by and see. Have a great week weekend!
Looks delicious and what a lovely doily. thanks for stopping by. HPS!
Happy Pink Saturday, Carol.
I love gingerbread, and I would have loved some of this. It looks delicious. And, it is even better served on such a pretty plate.
Carol, You are a lifesaver. Bobby G. loves gingerbread. I have never made it before and just last week looked for a box mix and didn't find one. Your recipe is PERFECT! I bought some jarred lemon sauce at a cute little shop this past summer. Now I can make the gingerbread and use the lemon sauce. HPS P.S. although I don't have a pretty pink plate like yours to serve it on.
Happy Pink, Carol...
How nice to visit with you. The gingerbread cake looks wonderful, and thank you for the recipe, I'm sure to try it. And what a lovely pink dessert plate.
Blessings,
Marianne
Carol...this looks delish. I will have to give it a try the next time my assignment is dessert for my dinner club! -- Joann
Look incredibly yummy! I don't often eat sweets, but my mouth is watering right now..
This looks yummy - I love some homemade gingerbread - especially with fresh whipped cream on top.
You have the prettiest goodies! I stopped by to check out your beef stew and got a yummy surprise. I'm pinning those glorious pink dishes too. Hope the sun peeps through in your neck of the woods today!
What a special antique find your featherweight was. How do I know? I visited Vee this morning and saw your comment. I'll look forward to a photo of your new find because my mother taught me how to sew on her Featherweight. I'm so grateful to my Mom for introducing me to a lifelong hobby. Enjoy your new machine!!
It is amazing how much work those lace pieces used to take that now are done by machine. Something is lost I think --- I have a tatting piece framed that my great aunt made, and I love that is not precisely perfect! Hope you get some good weather soon!
