Sunday Favorites
It is time for Sunday Favorites. Chari at Happy to Design is the hostess for this event. Visit her here and read why this event is a favorite.
This post was called Bridge of Oxford County and is one of my favorites.
Oh, did I love Bridges of Madison County – both the book and the movie. I have probably seen the movie a dozen times and read the book 3 or 4 times.
Today we took a drive to East Fryeburg where friends had told us of Hemlock Bridge. The road to the bridge is quite adequate for the first mile and then becomes a dirt road that is really quite passable except for a few too many deep ruts which the Thunderbird doesn’t deal with very well.
I had googled Hemlock Bridge and was not really impressed with information available. However, off we went. The day was glorious and the foliage was glorious and the bridge was gorgeous. Built in 1857, Hemlock Bridge is a 109 foot Paddleford truss strengthened with laminated arches. The bridge was reinforced in 1988 and you can drive across it today.
The bridge spans channels of the Saco River and on the other side there is an area for picnics.
Just a lovely day! Next time we will take a picnic.

That is a beautiful bridge! Loved the photos. I too loved Bridges of Madison County. Really loved the book! We went to Iowa to see the bridges. Such a fun trip. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!
Oh! I scrolled down and love those black dishes with the gold marbling. So unique and lovely.
Those are beautiful pictures and that bridge is amazing. I'm always glad to hear when a piece of history is maintained so that we can appreciate it 150 years after it was 1st built.
Have a wonderful Sunday.

My new header is a picture of Deb's Flowerbed Farm in Bridgton, ME. My most favorite antique shop - I just wish I didn't find something everytime I went in there!!!
What a pretty bridge - great photos. Thanks for sharing with us.
Carol, that is just fabulous! I remember a bridge like this when I was child. Not sure if it still exists or not, but my parents took me to see it on a Sunday afternoon. So this is just perfect for a Sunday afternoon tour. Thank you for sharing this with us.
XO,
Sheila :-)
Lovely, lovely pictures! I also love your blog header.
Hi Carol
I have been out all day but wanted to catch up with my friends blogs before I get cracking in the house. Your day trip was delightful, thank you for sharing.
I too love your blog header, this Deb's Flowerbed Farm in Bridgton, ME, must be a dream of a place to browse or shop in!!! Jackie
Hi Carol...
Ohhh...I just love those old covered bridges! What is it about them...they are just so quaint and full of charm! Maybe it's the feeling of "yesteryear" that draws me in! Anyway...I loved all of your photos and I bet that really was an enjoyable drive...minus the ruts! Hehe!
I also am a big fan of the Bridges of Madison County I read the book first and loved it! I don't know how many times that I have watched the movie...I lost count! Hehe!
Thank you so much for joining in with Sunday Favorites this week, my friend! I loved having you and really enjoyed this sweet post!!!
Hope that you're having a super Sunday!
Chari
so many gorgeous pics!
Carol, thanks for showing us this gorgeous bridge. Is it a single span? I don't see any supports in the middle underneath...
I love it that this is still there!
