Mother’s pink salad bowl

It started with her cutting board.

This was the “sandwich” board that belonged to my mother. Nothing smelly was chopped on this board. I remember this board so well. We walked to school and walked home for lunch and walked back to school and then walked home. There were no school lunches until I moved from the borough to the township. Lunch was very often an egg salad sandwich or tuna salad or PBJ and Campbell’s soup.
When my sister gave me the board, the pink bowl came to mind. My mother gave it to me years ago. It was the egg/tuna salad bowl.

Notice the fork with just 3 tines. That was the egg salad fork so that there would be larger chunks of egg in the egg salad. My mother had two so my sister and I each have one.

I love the designs on the bowl. I believe at one point they were nesting bowls with blue and green bowls. They must have perished along the way.
IMG_0943I think we will have egg salad sandwiches today!
I am joining Beverly at How Sweet the Sound for this weekly event. Be sure to stop by and say Happy Pink Saturday and see what the other “pinks” have shared.

How lovely that you have, and still use, some of your mothers things in your own kitchen.
Egg salad sandwiches are a favourite on this side of the pond too.
Bon appetit.

Such a pretty bowl! Isn't it amazing how we so clearly remember the details of even how our food was prepared as a child? Great post!

Oh Carol, what a lovely post, and what a beautiful bowl and cutting board; precious gifts from your past.

You made me remember my Mom's sandwich board -- it was a thick rectangle with a handle, and thousands of cutting marks. I am not sure where it is now.

As I plan my daughter's wedding, I am missing my mother more than ever; she was my etiquette and hospitality expert, and every day I think of something and "I'll have to ask Mom" floats through my head.

You should see the fresh snow that fell last night in NJ -- it GLITTERS! Like glass glitter ... it is amazing. I've never seen such sparkly snow.

I'll try for pictures, but I'm not very good at that!

Carol, I love them BOTH! What a special thing to have. Talk about memories. I wish I had my grandmother's rolling pin. If that pin could talk, I would know the secret to so many goodies.

XO,

Sheila :-)

Egg salad. YUM. I may have to fix some too since we haven't had any in months.

It's wonderful to have a precious piece from your mother that you can use in your kitchen, Carol. I have a little bowl from my grandmother that I know was part of a set. At least one piece survived.

A very special post about very special memories! The pink bowl is amazing and the cutting board...well, it's one that will last for ages! I have a yellow bowl that belonged to my Mother In Law that has a lovely basket weave pattern...it's a bit larger and maybe it was a piece to a nesting set. Thanks for the reminder of a special time.

Hi catching up on the blogs now that my PC is up and running again!!

Lovely post, I have never seen a fork like that. The bowl is lovely and both are wonderful mementoes of your mother who I am sure started you off on your cooking skills.

Jackie.
