Memory Monday

I am joining Donna at Brynwood Needleworks for Memory Monday. This is a post done in December of 2009 for Pink Saturday with a little reformatting.

I love Christmas and all that goes with it – the music, the decorations, the food and the reason for its being. I always have. Growing up in New Jersey, we always made a fuss about Christmas. Gram Potter would come to visit from Sussex and there would be a wonderful dinner at Uncle George’s in Green Village. There was always a new dress, a doll, and books. My dress was usually red. The books were so that my sister and I would not bug the adults as they celebrated in another room.

Each year there would be a new ornament or two for the tree. As we got older, my sister and I got to help pick them out. My mother liked to decorate the tree. Each strand of tinsel needed to go on separately. It took forever and the lights could not go on until the tinsel was on and it took forever….. My dad would offer to help but one at a time did not work for him. The front of the tree always looked better.

I found this picture buried in a box while I was cleaning out paperwork. It was taken in 1953. Such different times. Gram Potter (my dad’s mother) was truly an influence on me even after she was gone. Her love of her home, her gardens, her family and friends was legendary.

Notice my sister has the Madame Alexander Bride doll and I have a fake smile…….I loved Madame Alexander dolls. I still think Santa may have made a mistake on that one….

A lover of vintage photos, yours is wonderful! A former collector of Madame Alexander dolls ... Oh, tinsel memories. How we labored over each strand, tho Mother put the lights on the tree first, thank heaven.!

Once upon a time Santa made a big mistake in a doll he gave me ... I know that smile well. Chuckle!

Hope you had a lovely holiday celebration.
Have a wonderful week ~

Carol:
What a fun memory...even if the Madame Alexander doll went to the wrong person!

Thank you for sharing your story on Memory Lane Monday. Aren't we lucky to both have wonderful memories of our grandparents? What a blessing.

Happy Week, girlfriend!

Gee Carol that could be me in that photo. I had a similar doll ... and the tree with tinsel...and grandmothers looked a lot more grandmotherly back in those days, didn't they? Enjoyed reading this!

Such a sweet picture from the Time Machine. I had a few issues with the dolls I didn't receive, too, so I understand the difficulty of not receiving the Madame Alexander bride doll. Yours is lovely, too, though. Do you remember her?

What a lovely memory Carol. Your tree looks so much like ours with the tinsel(each strand individually placed) and your grandmother's hair, glasses and dress reminds me of my grandmother. Your parents were dressed like mine on Christmas Day and i wonder if that's a radio i see in the background? Did you sisters call your dresses "Party dresses"? Wonderful Christmas memories Carol. your post has put me more in a Christmas spirit than i was feeling.

What a great photo. :) Love the fake smile, too. We've all had to wear one of those.
