There are certain teachers that I remember. Some I remember fondly because I was good in their subject and others not so fondly because I wasn't. I am sure that Mr. Holden was a fine gentleman but I struggled with some of his math classes. In fact, if I had to do a word problem that started out with "two trains leave Chicago an hour apart at such and such a speed...... I would weep." I now know the answer. It doesn't matter what time they leave or at what speed they are going - they will both be LATE! So, after I struggled with algebra, we went on to two years of geometry. Again, I struggled. But something must have sunk in....I make quilts. I am working on one made up of hexagons. These hexagons come together and make stars. I sit here with graph paper, a protractor and a compass (and an eraser) and make templates for my quilt. So, thank you Mr. Holden.
Not all the pieces are sewn together yet and not all of those that are fit perfectly! Piecing this type of quilt by machine is challenging! I have been really inspired by the quilters that are participating in this QAL (quilt a long). The fabrics I have seen are wonderful.
The next two weeks are going to be quite busy so I am taking a little break. I am still having issues with this modem in the cabin and I need to resolve that. I need to do some blog redecorating and make relish! And of course, there is this quilt!

Hi Carol, now I know why I don't like quilting. It's the math!! Haha. It was my worst subject in school and I shed many tears over those awful math problems. I took Algebra, geometry and trigometry (what was that all about?) and then the 'new' math. All a nightmare. But, I can still add in my head most of the time. :-) Enjoy your blog break. See you soon. That two trains problem was always a problem for me too! I know enough adding, subtracting, multiplying and division to get by though. The harder algebra I leave to my husband to figure out since he's good at it. LOL

Your Mr. Holden could have been my Math teacher, too. Stated problems sent me to that place under my desk looking for a kleenex, and algebra sure didn't make any sense with all those x's=nothin'.
Just like you when I discovered quilting and the geometry that goes with it...well some Math made a bit more sense. Love the pieces you showed. Keep up the good work...I mean fun!!!!

Ah, yes, if only the geometry teacher had had us making a quilt. I feel as if I'd understand so much better now. Fun post. Have an enjoyable time away getting your quilt together and doing what you do best.

Carol, as the daughter of an educator, I can assure you Mr. Holden would be proud of you and your quilt, which is beautiful. Teachers were always proud of their students.
I remember those two trains too and dreaded what came next. At least now we've got a sense of humor about it.

You're brave, Carol! I've never even TRIED to make templates & calculate measurements on my own.
I recognize that French fabric!!! I am making Ms. C. a pinafore out of it to go over a little black dress with white buttons all over that look like polka-dots.
I look forward to this quilt's completion. I'm taking one to the long arm quilter this week to get it completed. Photos soon, I hope.

I too hated maths and those sorts of questions, my pet horror was "if a bath is filling with cold water at a rate of....." forget it!
I couldn't even begin to try and use those instruments of torture that a quilter needs to create templates, so hat's off to you my friend.
The fabrics you have chosen look wonderful, I know it's going to be another beauty.
Enjoy your break from blogging but please don't change the look of your blog.
I think the current look especially the header image is stunning, the best you've done yet!
